'Winterreise' van Schubert - ICMFEde 2018

Schubert's Winterreise

There are only few song cycles that give you as much food for thought as Schubert’s ‘Winterreise’. The interpretations vary from political criticism to a man’s search to know himself. Just like 'Die schöne Müllerin' this song is about love, but 'Winterreise' starts where love has already ended. The lyrics tell the story of a man who, after being rejected, flees in the winter cold to different regions. Schubert’s music follows the changes of mood very closely with 'Der Lindenbaum', 'Im Dorfe' and 'Der Leiermann' as absolute highlights of the piece.

Beethoven's 'Frühlingssonate'

The violin sonata as a symphony for violin and piano; that is what Beethoven must have had in mind when he composed ‘Frühlingssonate’. And indeed, his first violin sonata does not have the usual three, but four movements; just like in a symphony. Due to the springlike character of the piece it soon received the nickname ‘Frühlingssonate’.
