Ravel - Tzigane

Musical fireworks from Vienna and the sunny south

With violinist Francesco Dego and pianist Francesca Leonardi you'll hear two new stars in the sky of Italian chamber music. Both ladies will give you a wonderful evening with musical fireworks from Vienna and the sunny south. Beethoven wrote one of the most famous violin sonatas of the nineteenth century with his impressive 'Kreutzersonate'. The rousing finale of Beethoven's 'Kreutzersonate' is the perfect prelude to a Mediterranean musical feast. In Stravinsky's 'Suite Italienne' you can hear sizzling baroque in a modern style. Maurice Ravel brings the ardent music of the Roma to life in 'Tzigane'.

Francesca Dego

Francesca Dego sings on her violin. Especially the Italian operatic tradition inspires her enormously. And that results in sublime moments. Violinist Francesca Dego "adds carats to the gold of the notes she plays," a reviewer wrote enthusiastically. Everywhere the Italian Francesca Dego plays, one hardly gets out of talking about her beautiful sound, her compelling performance and her perfect technique. In the Edesche Concert Hall she takes her regular piano partner Francesca Leonardi with her. Recently both ladies recorded all of Beethoven's violin sonatas for the high quality Deutsche Grammophon CD label.

Francesca Dego on violin and opera:
"String instruments are very close to the 'cantabile' of singing. As an instrumentalist it makes a lot of sense to listen to opera and vocal music, because you then hear how a sentence is phrased in a natural way. If you only listen to violin music, you don't hear it."
(Read the interview with Francesca Dego.)

Francesca Leonardi

"Faultless" and "crystal clear": these are striking features attributed in the Italian press to Francesca Leonardi's beautiful piano playing. This is more than justified, because Francesca Leonardi is one of the greatest Italian pianists of her generation. She has won fourteen first prizes at national and international competitions. The general public got to know Francesca Leonardi during the 2014 World Cup, when she played during the opening ceremony in Theatro Municipal of Rio de Janeiro.

Tip: More 'Kreutzersonate' with Tolstoy and Janácek

The Dudok Quartet Amsterdam will play Janácek's 'First String Quartet', 'Kreutzersonate', on Friday 26 October. Music that has everything to do with Beethoven's violin sonata of the same name. Janácek was inspired in his string quartet by the novel 'Kreutzersonate' by the famous Russian writer Lev Tolstoy. Beethoven's 'Kreutzersonate' plays a key role in this tragic love story
