The story of Peer Gynt - Geert Bierling (organ) and Willem de Vries (baritone)

Peer Gynt Suite nr. 1, op. 46 (arr.)
Willem de Vries (bariton) Geert Bierling (orgel)
  • I. Morgenstemming
  • II. Ases dood
  • III. Anitra’s dans
  • IV. In de hal van de bergkoning
Even if you don't know what Peer Gynt's story is about, Grieg's music appeals to the imagination enough. With suggestive titles like 'Morgenstimmung', 'Ases dood' or 'In the hall of the mountain king' you immediately have an idea what Grieg's atmospheric music is all about. In addition, baritone Willem de Vries tells the story about the grumpy hero Peer Gynt. Organist Geert Bierling in turn translates Grieg's picturesque orchestral music to the colourful Ypma organ of the Edesche Concert Hall.
Peer Gynt Suite nr. 2, op. 55 (arr.)
Willem de Vries (bariton) Geert Bierling (orgel)
  • I. De bruidsroof / Ingrids klacht
  • II. Arabische dans
  • III. Peer Gynts thuiskomst
  • IV. Solveigs lied
PAUZE
Uit: Suite Française
Geert Bierling (harmonium)
  • I. Branle de Bourgogne
Like Griegs Peer Gynt, Poulenc's Suite Française (1935) is also intended as stage music. Poulenc wrote the music for Edouard Bourdet's play La Reine Margot. But unlike Grieg, Poulenc's music does not fit the story. Poulenc based himself on music from the time of Margeurite (Margot) de Valois (1553-1615), about whom the play is about, and incorporated several dances by the French sixteenth-century composer Claude Gervaise in his suite.
Priez pour Paix

Priez pour paix is one of Poulenc's most moving and touching songs. He composed the music in 1938 on the eve of the Second World War. In the same period, Poulenc went through a personal crisis and returned to the Catholic faith of his youth. The song is simple, respectful and full of awe for the seriousness of prayer. "I tried to give the song a feeling of ardour and above all humility, for me the most beautiful qualities of prayer," said Poulenc.

  • II. Pavane
Chants populaires
Geert Bierling (harmonium) Willem de Vries (bariton)
  • I. Chanson espagnole
  • II. Chanson française
  • III. Mélodie italienne
  • IV. Chanson hébraïque
Like Grieg, Ravel loved music from faraway places. In his Peer Gynt Suites Grieg was inspired by, among other things, Arabic music. Ravel takes you in his Chants populaires to Italy and Spain, among other places
Prélude

Don Quichotte à Dulcinée
Geert Bierling (harmonium) Willem de Vries (bariton)
  • I. Chanson romanesque
  • II. Chanson épique
  • III. Chanson à boire
Somewhere the novel character Don Quichotte by the Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes looks a bit like Peer Gynt. Both are antiheroes and experience the reality around them as a kind of fantasy world

The Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg made himself immortal with his music for the play 'Peer Gynt'. Geert Bierling, organist of the Rotterdam Doelen, made a special version of Grieg's music for the Ypma organ of the Edesche Concertzaal. Baritone Willem de Vries tells the famous story of Peer Gynt. Moreover, he can be heard in one of Maurice Ravel's most beautiful song series about another literary hero: Don Quixote.
