Programme
Songs of Schubert
Schubert: Im Freundeskreis
Experience an evening in Schubert's circle of friends. The title of the programme is closely linked to Schubert's friends and acquaintances in Vienna. The sung poems were mostly written by young poets from Schubert's immediate circle of friends, who were enthusiastic about his music. And just as good friends talk about everything, so these songs cover the breadth and depth of existence. Robert Holl tells Opus Klassiek: "The meaning of life has always been a very important theme for me. Maybe more intense as I get older. A large part of Schubert's lyrics is about that. I've carried that with me all my life, and not just at times when I was struggling."
Robert Holl
In Robert Holl, Schubert's songs find a more than dedicated singer. For years the Rotterdam singer has belonged to the international top of Dutch song singers and sings in the most important concert halls of the world, such as the famous Viennese Musikverein. Holl also excelled as an opera singer in the famous Wagner temple in Bayreuth, where he was one of the few Dutch singers to play various leading roles in, among others, Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Parsifal. Yet for Robert Holl, nothing beats a song night around Schubert. In 1990 he was awarded the prestigious honorary title 'Kammersänger' by the city of Vienna for his merits in the art of song.
Roger Braun
There are few accompanists who know how to be as in sight as Roger Braun. Although he was initially prepared for a solo career, he devoted himself entirely to the accompaniment of songs. He has won several foreign competitions for song accompaniment, such as the International Paula Lindberg-Salomon Competition in Berlin and the Wigmore Hall International Song Competition in London. "The awards paved the way for my international career as an accompanist. They are beautiful experiences. They make you feel like you're on the right track."
Roger Braun on the art of song accompaniment:
"Every day a singer can sound different. If you, as a pianist, do not take this into account, you are not suitable for this profession. You have to keep an eye on everything. If a singer doesn't feel well for once and goes through his party quite heavily, you have to pull him over the mountain at a certain pace."
