Doulce Memoire

The song Doulce Memoire was very popular in the time of the Renaissance. Many composers wrote variations about this melody. Indeed, in those days it was even more common as a composer to adapt an existing song than to create an original piece himself. That's why a lot of variations have been written about melodies known at that time. The pieces played later in the programme, such as Danza Alta and the Pavan Lachrymae, were also top hits in the Renaissance.

In the Middle Ages, music in Western Europe was mainly in one voice. Think of the Gregorian chant that was sung in the church. Also secular music was mainly in one voice. How that sounded Hester in two medieval dances

  • Contrapunctus I
Unfinished pieces always appeal to the imagination. That certainly applies to Bach's The Art of Fugue. This work is surrounded by quite a few mysteries. For example, it is unclear which instrument or ensemble Bach had in mind. So as a musician you can do a lot of things with it. You could call this Art of Fuge a kind of catalogue of possibilities in counterpoint. Each fugue called Bach a 'Contrapunctus' and is based on a simple basic theme. This theme is introduced in the first fugue (Contrapunctus I)

  • II. Fuga. Sostenuto e legato
  • III. Finale. Andante
Matthias Havinga talks about Mendelssohn's Sixth Organ Sonata: "This piece fits very well on the Ypma organ. It is an instrument built in 1882, but because the innovations in organ building did not penetrate our country until late, the Ypma organ is actually still very classical in design. This organ is exactly what Mendelssohn must have been looking for for his organ compositions: full of character and at the same time provided with lovely stops" All these sounds are heard in Mendelssohn's Sixth Organ Sonata. A piece that became particularly famous for its variations on the Lutheran chorale 'Vater unser im Himmelreich'

  • II. Scherzo
If you should mention one stylistic feature of Mendelssohn's music, it is that he had a fine nose for fairytale music. When hearing this 'Scherzo' from the stage music of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, you immediately think of water nymphs and magic fairies. Yannick Merlin (1976) made this arrangement for organ

Koraalbewerking, BWV 662, 'Allein Gott in der Höh' sei Ehr'
Matthias Havinga (orgel)
Like Die Kunst der Fuge, the so-called eighteen Leipziger Choräle form a kind of encyclopaedic collection of pieces, in this case chorale preludes. They belong to the pinnacle of Bach's spiritual music for organ. The special thing about this setting of 'Allein Gott in der Höh' sei Ehr' is that the chorale melody is richly decorated. The accompaniment has the form of a trio sonata: two fugal voices with an independent bass line underneath.

Sweet memories: masterpieces from bygone days come to life in the brilliant combination of recorder and harmonium. From Bach to the Middle Ages and from Renaissance to Romanticism. Matthias Havinga also plays beautiful solo pieces on the Ypma organ, including Mendelssohn's famous 'Sixth Organ Sonata' and Bach's chorale prelude 'Allein Gott in der Höh sei Ehr'. Matthias Havinga is organist of the Oude Kerk Amsterdam. Hester Groenleer plays in the successful recorder quintet Seldom Sene.
