Beethoven's String Quartet in a, op. 132 owes his nickname 'Heiliger Dankgesang' to the compelling slow part. While composing, Beethoven had become ill, so seriously, in fact, that he took it into account not to take it off alive. Fortunately Beethoven recovered after a few weeks and he was able to finish the work on his string quartet with new energy

Brahms' First Piano Quartet is best known for its last movement. In this 'Rondo alla zingarese' Brahms incorporated the playing style of the Hungarian gypsies. The fiery music is reminiscent of the Hungarian Dances - also based on music by the Roma - which Brahms composed at the same time
