In addition to piano sonatas, Beethoven liked to compose series of variations for the piano. The sonatas are usually serious pieces, in the variations Beethoven often makes himself heard from a lighter side, like in these Kakadu-Variationsen. Beethoven based the piece on an opera tune that was popular in his day. In ten variations Beethoven illuminates that melody from all possible angles.
Pianotrio nr. 3 in C, H. 332
Trio Martinu
  • I. Allegro moderato
  • II. Andante
  • III. Allegro
Besides Dvorák, Smetana and Janácek, Bohuslav Martinu is one of the most famous Czech composers. What they share, apart from their Czech background, is that they were inspired by the folk music of their country. In Martinu's Third Piano Trio, although nowhere literal folk songs sound, the piece is full of rhythms and melodic twists from musical folklore.
PAUZE
Pianotrio nr. 3 in f, op. 65
Trio Martinu
  • I. Allegro ma non troppo
  • II. Allegretto grazioso
  • III. Poco Adagio
  • IV. Finale. Allegro con brio
"This piano trio places Dvorák next to the greatest contemporary masters", wrote the influential Viennese music critic Eduard Hanslick. You could call Dvorák's Third Piano Trio one of his most internationally oriented pieces, written in the line of Dvorák's teacher Johannes Brahms. Yet folklore is not entirely absent. Both the second part and the 'Finale' are teeming with exciting Czech dance rhythms.
