The Painting Exhibition of Mussorgsky - Hexagon Ensemble (piano, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and horn)

Een avond in Georgiƫ
Hexagon Ensemble
Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov composed this atmospheric piece a few years before his death. It sounds as if the composer looks back and thinks back to the years he spent as a conductor in the Georgian capital. Ippolitov-Ivanov also became acquainted with Georgian folk music, which would remain present in his music from that moment on.

Since Mozart and Beethoven, no composer had ventured seriously into the combination of piano and wind instruments. Rimski-Korsakov accepted the challenge with his Piano Quintet in Bes. The clear lines and lilting melodies refer to the classical period of Mozart and Beethoven. The nostalgic sounding 'Andante', on the other hand, gives Rimski-Korsakov an unmistakably Russian touch

  • Dostojno jest
The horns of the Hexagon Ensemble have their instruments sing in this part of Rachmaninov's Chrysostomus Liturgy. Rachmaninov composed this vocal piece for Eastern orthodox liturgy. The harmonies are reminiscent of the mystical atmosphere of candles, incense and icons. With these sacred sounds of Rachmaninov's Chrysostomus Liturgy in mind, you also know where Mussorgsky got part of his inspiration for his painting exhibition. The Hexagon Ensemble plays the version Christiaan Boers made of 'Dostojno jest'

The power of Mussorgsky's music is that the composer only needs a few musical notes to evoke a certain image or atmosphere. In Painting Exhibition, for example, you can hear an evil dwarf (the gnome) jumping back and forth. Overwhelming is the last part, 'The Great Gate of Kiev'. The swinging bells of that gate conclude Painting Exhibition with cheerful chanting, interspersed with devout church chanting. Kees Olthuis made this arrangement for piano and wind instruments.

Music can just evoke certain images or moods. The Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky was a master at it. Just listen to his painting exhibition. In it the composer only needs a few notes to imagine an old castle, a couple of dancing chicks or a creepy gnome. No wonder that the visual music of Mussorgsky's Painting Exhibition often appears in cartoons, such as The Smurfs. The Hexagon Ensemble connects this Russian masterpiece with the equally colourful Piano Quintet of Mussorgsky's compatriot Rimsky-Korsakov.
