Bach's Violin Sonatas BWV 1015 and BWV 1018 are each four-part pieces with a slow, a fast, a slow and finally a fast part. This form is also called 'sonata a chiesa' (church sonata). Bach wrote them between 1720 and 1723 when he was Kapellmeister at the court of Köthen

For a long time musicologists thought this violin sonata was by Johann Sebastian Bach. The piece even received its own number in father Bach's list of works (BWV 1036). Three quarters of a century ago the mystery was solved. Carl Philipp Emanuel wrote this sonata together with his father. This is why the piece still sounds so baroque. Later, Carl Philipp Emanuel turned it into a trio sonata for flute and violin. Judith and Tineke play the original version

Fantasie in a, BWV 922

How long can you repeat something without it becoming boring? Bach lets you experience this in this breathtaking fantasy. One particular motif keeps recurring, but Bach's inexhaustible art of variation makes it sound different every time. Repetition is the power of advertising. Even the ancient Romans knew this. Reasoner Cicero stated that repetition "makes a deep impression on the listener", "as if a weapon repeatedly struck the same part of the body"

Unlike the famous Violin Sonatas BWV 1014-1019, Bach wrote this sonata for violin and basso continuo. Only the violin and bass parts are written out. The harpsichordist fills in the accompaniment himself, using numbers that Bach wrote under the bass part. This was customary in the Baroque era. Bach probably wrote this violin sonata while working in Cöthen and Weimar (1715-1720).

Bach wouldn't be Bach if he didn't also make the violin sonata something special. Until then the violinist stole the show in such pieces. The harpsichord player didn't have much more to do than working out a bass line. In his own violin sonatas Bach gives the harpsichord its own part. This makes violin and harpsichord equivalent to each other. Music that is in more than good hands with the twin sisters Steenbrink. As seasoned Bach specialists of the Holland Baroque ensemble, Judith and Tineke will take you on a spectacular journey through Bach's breakneck violin sonatas
