Hans van Haeften - Bach, Rheinberger and Vierne

Bach, Rheinberger and Vierne

Bach is the beginning and end of all music', composer Max Reger once said. For Joseph Rheinberger and Louis Vierne too, Bach's music was the yardstick for their own work. With his First Organ Sonata, Rheinberger pays a warm tribute to the baroque master. In Louis Vierne's First Organ Symphony we hear even more sources of inspiration. For example, in the final movement Vierne copied the art well from his teacher Charles Marie Widor. If you listen carefully, you'll hear a direct link to Widor's famous Toccata. Of course, Bach's music is not lacking. Hans van Haeften's plays include the monumental Preludium and fugue in Es, BWV 552 and the beautiful Pastorale

Hans van Haeften: "I also play Bach, no organist can escape that. That music is a highlight. And I improvise a lot, you always play new music. It arises at the moment of playing. The audience feels that tension, often likes it too. What's going on here?"

Hans van Haeften

Hans van Haeften (1986) is a rising star among the youngest generation of organists. He studied with Jos van der Kooy at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. He also followed several master classes with greats such as Ton Koopman and Daan Manneke. In 2012 Hans van Haeften won the Piet van Egmond Improvisation Competition. Since then it went fast and his concert practice took him past all the major organs of the Netherlands and Europe. As an organist he is connected to the Academy organ of Leiden University.
