Stirring rhythms, whimsical melodies and unexpected twists. The Alma Quartet shows how surprisingly Haydn, Brahms and Bartók composed for the string quartet. The thread running through the program is the close connection these composers had with Hungarian folk music. Haydn imitated the playing style of the Roma in the finale of his so-called 'Quint' quartet. Brahms also immortalized the compelling gypsy melodies in many of his pieces. And Bartók? He traveled the countryside with his phonograph in search of the authentic folk music of the Hungarian peasants, which he incorporated into his compositions. The robust rhythms and unpolished melodies caused his famous Fourth String Quartet to shock
