Lars Wouters van den Oudenweijer (clarinet) and Hans Eijsackers (piano) - Schumann, Brahms, Poulenc

Fantasiestücke, op. 73
Hans Eijsackers (piano) Lars Wouters van den Oudenweijer (klarinet)
  • I. Zart und mit Ausdruck
  • II. Lebhaft, leicht
  • III. Rasch und mit Feuer
With the poetic title Fantasiestücke, Schumann underscored the Romantic idea that creative expression is the product of the artist's unlimited imagination. This can be heard especially in the sudden mood changes of the individual movements of Schumann's Fantasiestücke.

Hans Eijsackers (piano) Lars Wouters van den Oudenweijer (klarinet)
  • I. Allegro appassionato
  • II. Andante un poco adagio
  • III. Allegretto grazioso
  • IV. Vivace
Actually, Brahms was already retired. But when he heard clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld play, it inspired Brahms to create, among other things, this first of two clarinet sonatas.
Première Rhapsodie
Hans Eijsackers (piano) Lars Wouters van den Oudenweijer (klarinet)
The Paris Conservatoire asked Debussy to compose an examination piece for clarinet students. As the composition progressed, Debussy became increasingly enthusiastic about the assignment and called the Rhapsody one of his most charming pieces.
PAUZE
Grand Duo Concertant in Es, op. 48
Hans Eijsackers (piano) Lars Wouters van den Oudenweijer (klarinet)
  • I. Allegro con fuoco
  • II. Andante con moto
  • III. Rondo, Allegro
There was a reason Weber gave this composition the glowing title Grand Duo Concertant. He wanted to write a real show piece, in which both musicians could show what they had to offer.

Hans Eijsackers (piano) Lars Wouters van den Oudenweijer (klarinet)
  • I. Allegro tristamente
  • II. Romanza
  • III. Allegro con fuoco
A few years before his death, Poulenc had planned to write a series of sonatas for winds and piano. This Clarinet Sonata was one of the last pieces Poulenc completed, although he did not live to see the world premiere.

Lars Wouters van den Oudenweijer is the uncrowned king of the clarinet. What makes his playing so special? He is able to make his clarinet sing. In the Edesche Concert Hall, he plays a handful of the most beautiful pieces written for the clarinet. Brahms, in his First Clarinet Sonata, evokes that distinctive melancholy atmosphere that you find in many of his last compositions. Song composer Francis Poulenc, on the other hand, knew better than anyone how to write for wind instruments. Completely logically, Lars chose the Dutch song accompanist and chamber musician Hans Eijsackers to accompany him in these wonderful pieces
