Music from the Golden Age
Not only are pastors able to preach well, they are also often great poets, at least in the seventeenth century. Even better, the lyrics linger when there are good melodies. Precisely at this time the Netherlands were inundated with music by a certain John Dowland from England. Melodies with a hint of melancholy and nostalgia, but which grab you by your guts as a listener. In the Republic they were poetic pastors like Dirck Raphaelsz. Camphuysen and Jodocus by Lodestein, who provided Dowland's melancholic songs with new, religious lyrics. Sometimes this was accompanied by theological sharpening, sometimes the texts were more light-hearted.
