Beethoven, Liszt and Mahler: storytellers in music

Does music tell a story? Many nineteenth-century composers did. Beethoven was one of the first to tell a story with his music. Beethoven's Sonata Appassionata, for instance, seems to be about passionate feelings (but it was the publisher who gave it this title to promote marketing). At the Bösendorfer Imperial Martyn van den Hoek tells the story behind the notes. Listen to Franz Liszt's impetuous First Mephisto Waltz, based on a dazzling wedding scene from Faust. Mahler's Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen, on the other hand, tells the story of a young bachelor who, wandering the world at the end of his path, has nothing more to expect than hurtful resignation. Martyn van den Hoek plays his own, acclaimed, piano arrangement of this song cycle

Martyn van den Hoek

He was the first winner of the renowned Utrecht Franz Liszt Competition. Since then he has had a special connection with Liszt's music. You can call him Liszt specialist, but Martyn van den Hoek is equally at home in Beethoven's music. In the meantime he has made several important recordings of Liszt's piano music

"Music is often very ugly"
"Music is much more than just listening.

Love and passion tumble over each other in Martyn van den Hoek's game. Liszt muses on love and the famous Beethoven gives air to all those feelings that can touch the heart. The Bösendorfer Imperial is ideally suited to depict this romantic game.
