Christmas Concert II - Festive German Baroque with Buxtehude, Schütz and part-song - Apollo Ensemble

Cantate: Willkommen, süsser Bräutigam
The cantata Willkommen, süsser Bräutigam by Vincenz Lübeck immediately sets the tone of this concert. In a nutshell, the text tells what Christmas is all about. It points ahead to the complete stature of the promised Messiah, who will be sacrificed like a lamb for the sins of the world.
Motet: Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland
With singing together
Rosenkranz sonate nr. 1, 'Maria Verkündigung'
The so-called Rosenkranz Sonatas by Heinrich Ignaz von Biber are a monument in Baroque violin music. The series is named after the Roman Catholic prayer wheel the rosary. Praying the rosary follows a particular structure in which certain events in the lives of Jesus and Mary are commemorated on certain days. The first sonata in the series begins at the beginning, Jesus' birth announcement by the archangel Gabriel to Mary.
Dialog: Gegrüsset seist du, Holdselige
The visual dialogue Gegrüsset seist du, Holdselige by Matthias Weckmann elaborates on the meeting of the archangel Gabriel and the Virgin Mary.
Choral: Es ist ein Ros entsprungen

Cantate: Fürchtet euch nicht
With the "Weihnachtsmusik" Fürchtet euch nicht by Christoph Bernhard, we find ourselves with the shepherds in the fields of Efrata. There, on Christmas night, an angel of the Lord appears to the shepherds. 'Do not be afraid, I proclaim to you great joy. Today in Bethlehem your Savior is born.'
Cantate: Salve, Jesu, patris gnate, BuxWV.94
Buxtehude's cantata Salve Jesu, patris gnate unigenite sings exuberantly of the birth of Jesus: "Hail thou, Jesus, only begotten son of the Father.

Choral: Vom Himmel hoch da komm ich her

Cantate: Venite, ocius, transeamus usque in Bethlehem
Urged by the angel to go see in Bethlehem, the shepherds in Schmelzer's pastoral cantata Venite ocius, transeamus usque in Bethlehem soon set out. In the song Quem pastores, the shepherds arrive at the stable in Bethlehem. They are not the only visitors. A pair of magi from the East have also now shown up.
Choral: Quem pastores

Instrumentaal: Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern
These kings or wise men had received the tidings of an important event by the glow of a bright star. Through Jerusalem, after visiting King Herod, they arrived in Bethlehem. The shining star is central to the song Wie schön leuchtet uns den Morgenstern.
Cantate: Herr nun lässt du deinen Diener, BuxWV.37
With Buxtehude's cantata Herr nun lässt du deinen Diener, we find ourselves in the temple in Jerusalem for a special encounter. There ancient Simeon awaits the fulfillment of a revelation. He would not die until he saw the Messiah. When he discerns Jesus in his mother's arms, he praises God: "Now, Lord, let your servant go in peace, as you have promised
Cantate: In dulci jubilo, BuxWV.52
The concert concludes with one of Europe's best-known Christmas carols, In dulci jubilo. The song has been known since the fourteenth century. Many composers have made an arrangement of it. Dietrich Buxtehude wrote this cantata. It forms a festive conclusion to this fictional Weihnachtsoratorium.

With this Christmas concert by the Apollo Ensemble, the Christmas festivities can truly begin. The Christmas story of the baby Jesus in a manger, the angels, the shepherds with the sheep and the three kings paints a moving picture that produced magnificent music throughout the centuries. The Apollo Ensemble delves into the heyday of German vocal baroque music from the period just before Bach. Cantatas and motets by Dietrich Buxtehude, Heinrich Schütz, Michael Praetorius and Matthias Weckmann are alternated with festive instrumental music. And, of course, you may sing along with some famous German Christmas carols
