Suite Italienne
Jonathan Fournel (piano) Simone Lamsma (viool)
  • I. Introduzione
  • II. Serenata
  • III. Tarantella
  • IV. Gavotta con due variazioni
  • V. Scherzino
  • VI. Minuetto e finale
Stravinsky based the Suite Italienne on his ballet Pulcinella (1920). For the first time in it he turned to music by Baroque composers such as Pergolesi. In Stravinsky's own words, "Pulcinella was my discovery of the past, a kind of revelation, which made my later work possible. It was a look back in time, the first of many love affairs in that direction, at the same time it was also a look in the mirror."
Vioolsonate nr. 1, op. 13
Jonathan Fournel (piano) Simone Lamsma (viool)
  • I. Allegro molto
  • II. Andante
  • III. Scherzo. Allegro vivo
  • IV. Finale. Allegro quasi presto
That music can help process trauma is proven by Gabriel Fauré with his First Violin Sonata. He wrote the piece when his relationship with Marianne Viardot was on the rocks. The compositions still ranks among the most beautiful French violin sonatas.
PAUZE
Vioolsonate nr. 3 in d, op. 108
Jonathan Fournel (piano) Simone Lamsma (viool)
  • I. Allegro
  • II. Adagio
  • III. Un poco presto e con sentimento
  • IV. Presto agitato
Although Brahms wrote his first two violin sonatas for two famous Hungarian violinists, he dedicated his Third Violin Sonata to pianist Hans von Bülow. That also explains the demanding piano part, making pianist and violinist completely matched.
Tzigane
Jonathan Fournel (piano) Simone Lamsma (viool)
With Tzigane, Ravel pays homage to the famous music of Roma. The piece begins on the G string of the violin. After a slow introduction, the piece culminates in a fiery csárdás.
