Trio voor klarinet, cello en piano in Bes, op. 11, Gassenhauer
Louis Rodde (cello) Paloma Kouider (piano) Annelien Van Wauwe (klarinet)
  • I. Allegro con brio
  • II. Adagio
  • III. Tema con variazioni
In Beethoven's day, the "Gassenhauer Trio" was very popular. In the heady final movement, Beethoven treated his audience to a series of imaginative variations on a then-overfamiliar aria. This aria was a downright top hit and was whistled by almost everyone in the streets (the gases) of Vienna. That is also where this piano trio gets its nickname.
7 Variationen über, 'Bei Männern, welche Liebe fühlen'
Paloma Kouider (piano) Louis Rodde (cello)
  • Thema. Andante
  • Variation 1
  • Variation 2
  • Variation 3
  • Variation 4
  • Variation 5. Si prenda il tempo un poco più vivace
  • Variation 6. Adagio
  • Variation 7. Allegro, ma non troppo
  • Coda
Not long after the Gassenhauer Trio, Beethoven composed a series of captivating variations on the aria "Bei Mannern, welche Liebe fühlen" from Mozart's opera Die Zauberföte, which was also famous in Beethoven's day
Fantasiestücke, op. 73
Paloma Kouider (piano) Annelien Van Wauwe (klarinet)
  • I. Zart und mit Ausdruck
  • II. Lebhaft, leicht
  • III. Rasch und mit Feuer
With the poetic title Fantasiestücke, Schumann underscored the Romantic idea that creative expression is the product of the artist's unlimited imagination. This can be heard especially in the sudden mood changes of the individual movements of Schumann's Fantasiestücke.

Actually, Brahms had already retired, but when he heard clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld play, the creative fire flared up again. The Clarinet Trio is one of four pieces Brahms composed especially for Mühlfeld.

With clarinetist Annelien van Wauwe, pianist Paloma Kouider and cellist Louis Rodde together on stage, it will be one big musical party. These three top soloists will play three top hits from the repertoire for clarinet, cello and piano. Beethoven can be heard from his most jovial side with his Gassenhauer Trio. Brahms then creates in his Clarinet Trio that typical autumnal atmosphere that you find in much of his late music. And Schumann serves up a musical fairy tale with his Fantasiestücke.
