Beethoven and Brahms composed perhaps the most famous piano trios of the entire nineteenth century. Beethoven as an up-and-coming talent wrote his Third Piano Trio in bustling Vienna in 1795. Brahms, on the other hand, composed his Third Piano Trio during an inspiring holiday in the Swiss Alps. "Under every stone you'll find a melody," he remarked enthusiastically. Many of them undoubtedly ended up in Brahms' Third Piano Trio.
