Of all the Bach sons, Wilhelm Friedemann was the least able to break free from the influence of father Bach. Yet Wilhelm Friedemann also owed much to his father. When Friedemann's first collection of Sonatas flop, father Bach sold the pieces from his own home publishing house. Despite the mediocre reception, these sonatas are among Friedemann's best pieces

Chromatische Fantasie und Fuge in d, BWV 903
Léon Berben
Bach's contemporaries counted his 'Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue' among his masterpieces. Presumably Bach composed the piece between 1717 and 1723, when he was Kapellmeister at the court of Köthen. The piece is renowned for its expressive and whimsical passages

Harpsichordist Léon Berben plays music by the Bach family. Both father Johann Sebastian and two of his sons are discussed: Wilhelm Friedemann Bach and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. Dad Bach remains completely in the tradition of the Baroque, Wilhelm Friedemann and Carl Philipp Emanuel become the most important forerunners of Romanticism. Enjoy this harpsichord recital between thoughtful Baroque and fiery expression
