Storioni Trio - Beethoven's Piano Trios

Pianotrio in c, opus 1, nr. 3
Storioni Trio
  • I. Allegro con brio
  • II. Andante cantabile con variazioni
  • III. Menuetto. Quasi Allegro
  • IV. Finale. Prestissimo
Although this piano trio is still in the line of Haydn and Mozart at first hearing, it churns and brews beneath the surface. In the first place, the cello is given a more independent role and is no longer, as is often the case with Haydn, a kind of derivative of the bass part in the piano.
Pianotrio in Bes, opus 11, 'Gassenhauer'
Storioni Trio
  • I. Allegro con brio
  • II. Adagio
  • III. Tema: Pria ch'io l'impegno. Allegretto – Var. I-IX
In Beethoven's time, the 'Gassenhauertrio' was very popular. In the tempestuous closing movement, Beethoven treated his audience to a series of imaginative variations on an aria known at the time. This aria was an absolute top hit and was whistled by almost everyone in the streets (the gasses) of Vienna. This piano trio also owes its nickname to that.
PAUZE
Pianotrio in Es, opus 70, nr. 2
Storioni Trio
  • I. Poco sostenuto - Allegro ma non troppo
  • II. Allegretto
  • III. Allegretto ma non troppo
  • IV. Finale. Allegro
Even more than in the two earlier pieces, Beethoven pays attention to the cello in this piano trio. As a statement he even lets it start with the cello. Another remarkable fact is the lieder-like third movement, which seems to be a wink to the music of Beethoven's famous contemporary Franz Schubert.

The Storioni Trio is more or less fused with Beethoven. In Switzerland and the Netherlands the trio played all their music for piano trio with great success. "A close-knit, animated ensemble in sound and interpretative intent", wrote the magazine Gramophone. In the Edesche Concert Hall, the Storioni Trio can be heard in two turbulent early piano trios by Beethoven. The later Piano Trio on. 70, no. 2, which sounds after the break, on the other hand, is one of his most amiable and subtle chamber music. Beethoven at its best!
