Mariam Batsashvili - Legendary Liszt - World Pianists

Sarabande und Chaconne aus dem Singspiel Almira von Handel, S. 181
Mariam Batsashvili
Liszt not only wrote his own music, he also liked to adapt pieces by other composers. The special thing about these pieces is that you can hear what Liszt himself appealed to in that music. Listen Handel through Liszt's ears!

  • III. Bénédiction de Dieu dans la solitude
Liszt was a deeply religious man. You hear a lot of that in his compositions. The best-known example of this is his cycle of ten piano pieces 'Harmonies poétiques et religieuses'. They are inspired by poems by the French writer Alphonse de Lamartine (1790-1869). The third in the series, 'Bénédiction de Dieu dans la solitude', is one of Liszt's most beautiful and most frequently performed compositions.
Années de pèlerinage, deuxième année (supplement), S. 162 "Venezia e Napoli"
Mariam Batsashvili
The piece 'Venezia e Napoli' shows the cheerful and airy side of Liszt. It comes from the collection 'Années de pèlerinage' (Pilgrim Years). The second part of it tells the story of Italy. One in 'Venezia e Napoli' Liszt uses popular melodies that circulated in his time
PAUZE
Fantasie über Motive aus Figaro und Don Juan, S. 697
Mariam Batsashvili
In the nineteenth century, an evening of opera was not for everyone. That's why Liszt made a kind of summary of famous operas for piano. In this way everyone in the living room could get acquainted with famous 'opera hits'. Liszt wouldn't be Liszt if he didn't pour a virtuoso sauce over it
Loreley, S. 532
Mariam Batsashvili
Special places in the landscape are often a breeding ground for stories and legends. So did the Loreley. This is a 132 meter high rock that marks the point where the river Rhine makes a sharp bend. Due to the strong currents, ships regularly collapsed. But in popular belief it was precisely a singing nymph that distracted the skippers, causing them to sink into the dangerous rapids. This story Liszt tells in 'Loreley'.
Hongaarse rapsodie nr. 2, S. 244
Mariam Batsashvili
When Liszt visited a gypsy camp for the first time in 1840, he was immediately touched by the music made there. It inspired Liszt to create no less than nineteen Hungarian Rhapsodies, the second of which is the best known

"She made every passage into something special", wrote NRC Handelsblad enthusiastically about pianist Mariam Batsashvili. In 2014 she won the Tenth International Liszt Competition in Utrecht with flying colours. No wonder Liszt's music has no more secrets from her. In the Edesche Concert Hall you can experience the beautiful playing of this young piano prodigy up close, in music by Franz Liszt, of course.
