From Baerle Trio

Everything the Van Baerle Trio tackles turns into musical gold. The trio won one prize after another and their first CD was immediately worthy of an Edison. The solo careers of pianist Hannes Lover, violinist Maria Milstein and cellist Gideon den Herder are also booming. Hannes and Maria already made a big impression in the Edesche Concert Hall. With Gideon by their side, I'm sure it will happen again. Enjoy this "extremely talented trio" (NRC Handelsblad).

Hannes Lover, Maria Milstein and Gideon den Herder have formed the famous Van Baerle Trio since 2004. The name of the trio derives from the street where their musical roots lie: the Van Baerlestraat in Amsterdam. This is where the three musicians meet during their studies at the Amsterdam Conservatory, a stone's throw from the Concertgebouw. From the Van Baerlestraat, Hannes, Maria and Gideon also built their international careers. Experience this unique trio in the Edesche Concert Hall.

Hannes Lover and Beethoven

Pianist Hannes Lover has a thing for Beethoven. In an interview with the Edesche Concertzaal he says: "From his earliest compositions you can hear his personality through the notes, it's really Beethoven. The hard work, the jokes, his worldview, everything he puts into his music and you can hear that."

Beethoven's Second Symphony, on. 36

Experience Beethoven's 'Second Symphony', op. 36 in a very special version. The Van Baerle Trio plays the arrangement Beethoven himself made of his symphony. A sunny, almost exuberant piece, with that insanely beautiful 'Larghetto', that sounds like a tender song

Variations, on. 44, the unknown pearl among Beethoven's piano trios

Beethoven must have thought, when he was a young composer of 22 with his 'Variations', that 'the master shows himself in restriction'. 44 started. Just listen to the theme, where the piece starts. What's there to make of that? Beethoven provides proof that he can make a blood coagulating piece out of even the seemingly least interesting material. Be surprised by this unknown pearl among Beethoven's piano trios.

Maria Milstein: "The violin has always had an exotic appeal to me."
For Maria the way to the violin was natural, but not self-evident. "My father is a pianist and my mother a viola player and viola teacher. So if my dad didn't have to study, my mom taught viola. Often there were students on the floor, so there was almost always music." Why she chose the violin in the end was mainly due to her mother's viola students. "The piano was already a part of my daily life at home. Maybe that's why I thought it was a less exciting instrument. The violin was just a little exotic."
(Read the interview with Maria Milstein.)

This is the second concert in the series 'The choice of Hannes's lover'. Hannes Minnaar is artist in residence of the Edesche Concertzaal in season '16-'17
