Although Chopin was born in Poland, he spent most of his life in France. As a tribute to his homeland he wrote many piano pieces, based on Polish folk music, such as the polonaise and the mazurka. This set of three Mazurka's form a beautiful unity, in which each of the three pieces has its own character. That's how the first Mazurka sounds like a tender portrait. In the second Mazurka, Chopin returns the main melody in a varied way. Finally, the third Mazurka with its fast pace resembles another Polish folk dance: the 'oberek'

For this ambitious series of variations Rachmaninov based himself on Chopin's Prelude in c, on. 28, no. 20. Rachmaninov built up his series in such a way that it sounds like a real sonata. The variations eleven to eighteen then form the slow middle section. By the way, Rachmaninov was not the only one who subjected Chopin's Prelude to a series of imaginative variations. Ferruccio Busoni also wrote such a series of variations in 1885

Sergei Ljapunov was both a gifted composer and a celebrated pianist. No wonder there are many piano pieces among his compositions, such as the Barcarolle and the Novelette. Titles where you don't immediately think of Russian folk music. Yet Ljapunov, like his teacher Balakirev, was inspired by Russian folklore. By the way, Ljapunov came from a talented family. His brother Alexander Ljapunov became an important mathematician
Fantasie-ouverture, 'Romeo en Julia'
Florian Noack
Tchaikovsky based his fantasy overture on the famous love story of Romeo and Juliet. Although coming from two arguing families, Romeo and Juliet fell in love with each other. They decide to marry each other in secret, but as in a romantic love story it doesn't end well. Their love for each other must pay with death for both lovers. Florian Noack turned Tchaikovsky's compelling music into a masterly piano version, which is now also regularly played on the major stages by such greats as Cyprien Katsaris and Boris Berezovsky

Who doesn't know the love story of Romeo and Juliet? It inspired Tchaikovsky to write his famous orchestral work 'Romeo et Juliette'. World pianist Florian Noack undoubtedly melts many hearts with this masterpiece. The same thing happens to Chopin's touching Mazurkas. 59 and Rachmaninov's bloodcurdling 'Variations on a theme by Chopin'.
