Schumann's

'Piano Quintet

' contains everything you would expect from a romantic composer. It is full of extreme contrasts and passionate melodies; music with which the composer forces the musicians on the edge of their seats. Schumann composed this hardly equalled masterpiece in 1842, the year in which he composed a great deal of chamber music. As one of the first composers ever, Schumann melted the sound worlds of piano and string quartet into one whole with astonishing results. Generations of chamber music lovers have since taken Schumann's 'Piano Quintet' to heart. In the same year the 'Piano Quartet' was formed, which will also be performed during this concert. As a contrast between these chamber music works, Klára Würtz plays a selection from Schumann's poetic 'Kreisleriana'.

Klára Würtz

For the Hungarian pianist Klára Würtz it was clear from an early age that she wanted to go further in music. At the age of fourteen she was admitted to Ferenc Liszt Music Academy in Budapest. There she studied with Zoltán Kocsis, Ferenc Rados and György Kurtág, and received a scholarship from master pianist András Schiff to take master classes with him in England

As a chamber musician Klára Würtz is very active. She is part of Klaviertrio Amsterdam, with whom she gives a series of concerts in the United States every year. She regularly played with violinists such as Janine Jansen and Dmitri Makhtin. She recorded over 30 CDs. Her recording of Mozart's piano sonatas has been a reference recording for fifteen years. The 2012 recording of the Beethoven violin sonatas with the young Hungarian top violinist Kristóf Baráti also received international acclaim (an important German newspaper called it "the best recording to date").

Klára Würtz: "At the conservatory it was never good enough"
"Every week you had to come up with a whole new piece, but it was never enough. Yet it has shaped my personality enormously. What I learned from it was that despite everything, you have to develop your own vision. It was either standing or being dragged into the stream."
(Read the interview with Klára Würtz.)

Daniel Quartet
