Around the year 1914

Cellist Doris Hochscheid and pianist Frans van Ruth will take you back to the years at the beginning of the last century. Romanticism and modern music intertwined. Debussy, Stravinsky and Webern all took new musical paths. During this concert mezzo-soprano Barbara Kozelj will play a special role. She sings a number of songs by Elmer Schönberger, based on letters Maurice Ravel wrote to the French war front at the beginning of the First World War. Doris Hochscheid and Frans van Ruth are at home in Dutch music for cello and piano like no other. That's why they play the Cello Sonata by Matthijs Vermeulen, which originated in the same time

'Maurice chéri' - Maurice Ravel and the First World War

The Dutch composer Elmer Schönberger drew inspiration for five new songs from the letters of Maurice Ravel. In these letters Ravel caught up with the home front about his experiences from behind the battle lines. Ravel also tells how he suffers under the German display of power and therefore decided to enlist. Although Ravel would prefer to fly around with a bomber, he couldn't get any further than an appointment as a truck driver... Experience Ravel's touching letters!

War movies are quite popular, of those series as "Band of Brothers". Composer Maurice Ravel fought in World War I. He wrote letters and took pictures. Friday evening mezzo-soprano Barbara Kozelj sings these letters and we show pictures of Ravel. Cellist Doris Hochscheid, pianist Frans van Ruth and mezzo-soprano Barbara Kozelj play music by Debussy, Stravinsky and Vermeulen. Maurice Ravel's five-handed piano piece culminates in five songs in which Ravel talks about his experiences at the front, made visible at the same time as Ravel's photographs.
