What Schubert is to the Lied, that is Mendelssohn to the self-invented genre 'Lied ohne Worte' (Songs without words). With the difference that the melody and accompaniment are both played on the piano. Moreover, there is no text. In the spirit of Romanticism much was left to the imagination of the listener, although Mendelssohn, with titles such as 'Venetian Gondola Song', gives an idea of what lies behind the notes

Pianoxtets are scarce in chamber music. Mendelssohn added a scoop to that with the special combination of instruments. With double bass and two violas (next to violin and cello) Mendelssohn provided a darker tinted line-up, which gives the piece more the character of a piano concerto than of intimate chamber music
