Camerata Trajectina - 500 years of Reformation

From psalms to martyrdom songs

Anyone who wants to experience music from the early days of the Reformation must be at Camerata Trajectina. In this concert Martin Luther is central. Not only do songs by Luther himself sound, Camerata Trajectina also performs various psalm melodies, ranging from the Souterlie blankets to the psalms of Petrus Datheen. A special genre in this concert are the martyrdom songs, in which dead Anabaptists, but also victims of the Inquisition, were honoured. Few ensembles in the Netherlands have been as concerned with Protestantism as Camerata Trajectina. Earlier, the ensemble provided intriguing insights into Protestantism in the Low Countries with programmes on the Baptist movement, Calvinism and other movements.

Camerata Trajectina likes to work around themes and commemorations. Now it is the turn of Maarten Luther and the celebration of 500 years of Reformation. Singer Nico der Meel will explain the songs during the concert. "The language is old, so it's necessary to explain a word here and there or tell the background to a song." The singer has put months of preparation work into the project. "It's love work. It makes me happy."

Camerata Trajectina

Camerata Trajectina has been a warm advocate of Dutch music from the Middle Ages to the Golden Age for some forty years. The ensemble was awarded the Visser Neerlandia Cultuurprijs in 2016. The ensemble's greatest asset is its unique combination of intensive scientific research and spontaneous performances. The ensemble participated in numerous editions of the Holland Early Music Festival Utrecht, gave hundreds of concerts in the Netherlands and Flanders, and toured Europe and beyond. One of the ensemble's specialities is the musical adornment of national commemorations, such as those of the Union of Utrecht (1979), William of Orange (1984), Constantijn Huygens (1987), the Peace of Munster (1998), Calvin (2009).

Camerata Trajectina takes you to the early years of the Reformation. On 31 October 2017 it will be exactly 500 years ago that Martin Luther announced his 95 propositions. Not only was Luther a famous theologian, he also wrote beautiful songs. Camerata Trajectina brings to life the earliest music of the Reformation, such as songs Luther composed herself, and of course the psalms are not lacking. Experience this music as it must have sounded in Lutheran times.
